Defence Health Maintenance Limited (DHML) was established by the Ministry of Defence as a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) to enable military personnel and their families benefit maximally from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). It brings together the health care resources of the Nigerian Army, Navy and the Nigerian Air force and compliments it with a network of health care facilities and professionals. Currently DHML uses 138 military Health Care facilities spread across the country.

The Defence Health Maintenance Limited has a Board of Directors with the Honourable Minister of State for Defence (HMOSD) as the chairman, other members of the Board of Directors are the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Company (MD/CEO).

The Board of Directors of Defence Health Maintenance Limited at its 11th meeting held on the 17th June 2010 unanimously approved by ratification the appointment of the incumbent Managing Director - Surgeon Commodore BA Sanni (Rtd), for a second term.
